Not only are we losing existing businesses, new businesses refuse to relocate here due to the lack of a budget, enormous pension liabilities and failing schools, all of which lead to a climate of uncertainty. Businesses hate uncertainty. We are losing population due to job losses, while the states that surround us are growing.

 

Our citizens are becoming increasingly dependent on food stamps and unemployment benefits, further increasing our budget deficits. Our worker’s compensation premium rates are several times higher than those of our surrounding states, costing even mid-sized companies (50 employees) hundreds of thousands of dollars per year in additional expenses. We cannot be compassionate if we cannot be competitive.
